- Ray's funeral
- A look back
Ray had been seriously ill for some considerable time, and was in much pain
for the last six months. Never one to complain, it was however obvious
during our infrequent phone conversations that it was getting too much to
bear. It was difficult for me to know just what to say, but - ever the
gentleman - Ray always made it easy in the self-effacing way that was the
mark of the Man he truly was.
Ray Pickrell made it his business to support the TR3OC, and he attended
every Beezumph Rally up until his illness prevented it. On first name terms
with many, many of us, it was - and I know I speak for all when I say this -
an honour to know him.

Ray was approached by the various classic magazines
over the last eighteen months for anecdotes and gems of wisdom to be written into reports
and stories about his life. Ray was suitably blunt when he 'suggested' that it would be
nice to print the stories while he was still alive so that he 'could ready the bloody
things'. Quite.
Despite the fact that we knew it was unlikely Ray would to be fit enough to
attend Beezumph 14, we asked him whether he would be our Guest of Honour; he
readily agreed. It was a mark of respect that we re-named Saturday's 'Race'
class the 'Ray Pickrell Class' with his full agreement. It was only a little
thing, but it hit the spot.
When someone is gone, acres of newsprint is suddenly devoted to them. At the
TR3OC, we did it before he left - and we knew, that he knew, we thought him
a hero.
He was.
